If you are left-handed and thinking about pottery, the honest headline is this: clay is one of the friendlier crafts for you. There is no left-handed guitar to buy, no reversed scissors to hunt down for every task, no chair that puts your writing arm in the wrong place. Both of your hands work at the same time, on the same piece, for almost every minute you are at the wheel. That said, there are four or five places where handedness genuinely matters, and knowing about them ahead of time saves you months of quietly assuming you are bad at this when really you are just fighting a setup built for someone else.
Start with the wheel. Almost every electric potter's wheel sold in North America and Europe spins counterclockwise when viewed from above, and almost every book, class, and video assumes that direction. It is not a law of physics, it is a convention, and it exists because the standard hand positions were worked out by and for right-handed potters. Practically every modern electric wheel, and most of the older ones you will find in a used listing, has a reversing switch somewhere on the head or the housing. Flipping it makes the wheel spin clockwise.
It is worth being precise about what reversing does and does not change. It genuinely mirrors the geometry: on a counterclockwise wheel the clay travels past you from your left, across the front, and away to your right, which is why right-handed potters do most of their shaping at roughly the four or five o'clock position with the right elbow locked against the right thigh. Reverse the wheel and that working position moves to seven or eight o'clock, with your left elbow braced on your left thigh. What reversing does not change is anything about the clay itself. It does not make centering easier, it does not change how fast a wall thins, and it does not change wedging. The old studio belief that your spiral wedging direction has to match your wheel direction is folklore. Clay does not remember. The one visible difference is that throwing rings spiral the other way, which nobody but another potter will ever notice.
The real cost of reversing is social, not technical. Every demonstration you watch for the rest of your life will be counterclockwise. Every shared wheel in every studio will be set counterclockwise when you sit down. If you learn mirrored from day one, you spend the rest of your throwing life translating, and you will find yourself unable to hop on a friend's wheel without hunting for a switch. Our suggestion, and it is only a suggestion, is to give the standard counterclockwise direction a genuine try for your first few months before deciding. Plenty of left-handed potters throw counterclockwise for decades and never think about it again.
Here is the part that surprises people. Centering on a standard counterclockwise wheel may already suit you. In the conventional position, the left hand is the braced hand: it locks against your thigh or hip and applies steady, unmoving inward pressure while the clay rotates into it. The right hand caps the top of the mound and presses down and back. The braced hand is the one doing the patient, precise, do-not-wobble work, and if you are left-handed, that is your strong hand. Many lefties find centering comes to them faster than it does to their classmates for exactly this reason.
Pulling walls is where the standard instruction shows its bias. You will hear "left hand inside, right hand outside" everywhere. That is written for right-handers, and the reason is that the outside hand is the one that actually does the work. It sets wall thickness, it lifts the clay, it determines the profile. The inside hand is mostly a backstop and a gauge. So if you are left-handed, ask yourself whether you want your dominant hand on the job that matters. You have three workable answers. Throw exactly as taught, with your left hand inside, which is what most left-handed potters end up doing and it works fine. Or keep the standard counterclockwise direction but put your left hand outside and your right inside, working at seven or eight o'clock instead of four or five, accepting that slurry now flies toward your left and your bracing leverage is slightly different. Or reverse the wheel and mirror the whole thing. All three produce good pots.
Trimming deserves more caution than throwing does. When you trim, the pot is held to the wheel head by friction, clay wads, or a chuck, and your bracing hand is the thing standing between a caught tool and a ruined pot. Set up in the usual way, the rotation drives the pot into the cutting edge and pushes the tool into your brace. Reverse the wheel and a catch now pulls in the opposite direction, toward the side you are not defending. Chucks themselves do not care: a thrown clay chuck, a foam chuck, or a mechanical grip holds equally well either way. Your reflexes are what need retraining. Go slow, take light cuts, and expect the first few pots to feel wrong.
Trimming tools are one of the few places where handedness is real rather than habitual. Many loop tools are sharpened on both sides and are effectively neutral. But single-bevel tools are not. Japanese kanna are typically ground with one cutting face and only work in one orientation, and several tool makers offer left-handed versions of their trimming tools for exactly this reason. Fettling knives are the same story: they carry a bevel on one side, so a right-ground knife held in a left hand tends to angle the cut. If you buy one good tool as a lefty, make it a properly handed trimming tool.
Handles are more forgiving than people expect. Pulling a handle from a carrot of clay is symmetric: you hold with one hand and pull with the wet one, and it makes no difference which is which. Where lefties get caught is attachment. Because your approach to the mug is mirrored, it is easy to set a handle with a slight twist that you will not see from the front. Check alignment by sighting straight down from directly above before the clay stiffens, every time, until it becomes automatic. Pitchers and teapots are where handedness becomes a design decision rather than a habit. A side-handled teapot in the kyusu style is genuinely built for one hand, and if you are making one for yourself, build it mirrored. The same logic applies to any thumb rest, facet, or asymmetric decoration you add to a handle.
Most other tools are neutral. Ribs, needle tools, wire cutters, sponges, scoring tools, and ribbon tools are either symmetric or simply flipped over. Asymmetric profile ribs are not really handed, since you can turn them around and use them on the other side of the pot. The things that actually constrain you are studio fixtures, not hand tools: slab roller cranks, extruder levers, and wheel switch placement are mounted where they are mounted. What you can control, control. Put your water bucket and tool tray on whichever side you reach to, not where the last person left them.
Taking a class from a right-handed instructor is easier than it sounds if you use one trick: sit facing them rather than beside them. Face to face, their right hand appears on your left, which is exactly the mirror you want, and you can copy what you see without translating anything. Sitting shoulder to shoulder is the version that scrambles your brain. Beyond that, ask your instructor to describe positions as inside hand and outside hand instead of left and right. Good instructors do this happily, and it makes their teaching clearer for everyone in the room. When you save videos to study later, most phone editing apps will flip footage horizontally in one tap, which turns any demonstration into a left-handed one.
The last thing worth saying is the reassuring thing. Centering is hard for everybody. Walls collapse for everybody. If your first cylinder goes sideways, handedness is almost certainly not the reason, and chasing a mirrored setup before you have put in the hours can send you looking for a fix to a problem you do not have. Handbuilding, glazing, wedging, and loading are all essentially handedness-neutral. The wheel is the only place the question comes up at all, and even there, both hands are working together the entire time.
